Want to remove all limescale from your tap yet clean it gently? Our cleaning recommendations show you how to descale high-quality taps without having to unscrew them. They also explain how to clean a dirty aerator and remove limescale marks.
While enabling us to wash and clean ourselves every day, taps themselves often become the ‘victims’ of dirt. Our hands leave behind greasy residues and dirt particles. Even the water itself can take its toll on the material, especially in the form of limescale deposits. This doesn’t only apply to basin taps; shower mixers, bath mixers and kitchen taps should also be regularly descaled. But how can you best ensure that your taps will remain beautiful for many years to come? And how can a high-quality hansgrohe tap be cleaned without unscrewing it? Read on to discover how to correctly clean your taps and properly care for them over the long term.
Just bear in mind the following tips, so that cleaning and maintaining your tap will be no big deal.
Another tip: clean the sink and the spout at the same time. This makes everything gleam again so you can truly enjoy using water.
hansgrohe recommend that its customers use a mild, citric-acid-based cleaning agent. This has several advantages. Conventional concentrated products with great cleaning strength can often irritate the hands and eyes, trigger allergies and redden sensitive skin. Chemicals that are too strong will also corrode the tap’s materials. At first the damage goes unnoticed, but microscopically small scratches or superficial burns are enough to tarnish the high-gloss finish. Over time, dirt and limescale can increasingly settle in these areas. Mild cleaning agents are also more eco-friendly.
If you live in a hard water area, limescale deposits are likely. Prevent these from forming by briefly wiping the tap after every use if possible. This removes tap water before it can settle.
The hansgrohe quality laboratory has tested numerous cleaning and descaling agents. We came to the conclusion that in this regard, less is more. Citric acid is our favourite active substance: effective, fragrant and not harmful to the tap or humans. You can directly download our detailed cleaning recommendations as a PDF file.
We do not recommend using household agents such as baking soda or cleaning agents based on vinegar, acetic acid, formic acid, sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite, phosphoric acid or even hydrochloric acid. These substances are sometimes highly corrosive. If used frequently, they will damage the metal (even with the most high-quality finish). We recommend citric acid without reservation.

hansgrohe QuickClean technology offers an efficient solution for combating light but unsightly limescale deposits on your tap. Flexible silicone nozzles on the spray regulators enable limescale and dirt particles to be removed by simply rubbing the nozzles with your fingers. Heavier limescale deposits on taps can be removed through the use of a citric-acid-based cleaning agent. Always spray this onto a cotton cloth prior to carefully rubbing it on the tap. The tap should then be thoroughly rinsed with clean water.
How often you need to descale your tap depends on the hardness of your water. In areas with more mineral-rich water, more frequent cleaning is recommended. Keep an eye out for even the initial signs of a limescale build-up so as to combat this in a timely manner.
Carefully unscrew the aerator and soak it in a mixture of water and a mild citric-acid-based cleaning agent. Once all limescale has come away from the filter screen, you can simply screw the aerator back on and briefly rinse it with running water.
